At-Home Melasma Treatment and Prevention!
Journal
Our skin is amazing and always changing! Did you know that melanin is the substance that provides pigmentation to our skin, hair, and eye color? The appearance of our skin on the surface can vary depending on a lot of things, like what we eat, our hormones, the time of year, and even our age! Sometimes, we might notice darker areas on our skin due to increased melanin, which is called hyperpigmentation. One common type of hyperpigmentation is called Melasma.

So, get ready to learn all about melasma, one of the most common skin concerns - the ins and outs, what causes it, and the most gentle yet effective treatments out there!
What is Melasma and how does it look?
Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation, which is an increased melanin in the skin. It causes brown or greyish-brown patches in three areas of the face - the jawline, central part, and cheekbones. Melasma is stubborn because it results from damage in the deeper layers of the skin. Although, it can’t be completely eradicated, but there are ways to reduce its appearance.
Causes of Melasma
The exact cause of melasma is not yet known, but certain factors may trigger it. These include hormonal changes, medication, and sun exposure. Fluctuations in hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, can trigger melasma. Sun exposure, either from the sun or tanning beds, can worsen existing melasma.
There are different types of melasma, depending on the depth of the patch/spot.
Myths about Melasma
Some pervasive myths about melasma are simply untrue. These include:
- Only pregnant women get melasma: melasma can affect men and women of all ages, in all stages of life.
- Melasma goes away on its own: Unfortunately, you’ll need to treat your melasma with care—it doesn’t tend to go away of its own accord.
- You can’t reduce the appearance of melasma: There are plenty of treatment options that can help reduce melasma patches.
Treatment for Melasma
Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation that is difficult to treat. It requires a consistent, multi-faceted approach. To treat melasma, you need to do two things:
1. Prevent it from getting any worse by avoiding harsh ingredients, over-exfoliation, waxing, tanning beds, and extended exposure to the sun. Use sunscreen with zinc oxide and SPF 50 every day.
2. Use safe and effective topical products that work for your particular type of melasma.
Topical products containing traditional depigmenting agents have been used to treat hyperpigmentation for decades, but concerns are growing due to potential side effects of these ingredients, such as redness and excessive irritation. (Click here to know the studies)
Here are gentle and clinically proven ingredients that provides similar results without any irritation -
Diglucosyl Gallic Acid (DGA): More potent than Vitamin C and Kojic Acid, this ingredient is known to help restore a perfect-looking complexion while it helps even the appearance of the skin tone.
Niacinamide: Or Vitamin B3, is beneficial to the skin in many ways, including as a moisturizer and antioxidant. It can also help lessen the appearance of age spots and is very tolerable by many skin types.
Mushroom Extracts: A traditional medicinal herb, with proven wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. They enhance the natural defenses of the skin, help fight free radicals, and defend the skin against harmful environmental stressors.
Rumex: Wildcrafted by local communities in the northern Canadian Prairies, Rumex is a powerful brightener. It treats melasma more effectively without any unwanted side effects.
Slow-release AHAs: The lamellar gel AHAs provide gentle, effective exfoliation to the skin. The unique technology helps restore even skin tone and reduces pigmented spots.
